When To Plant Empty
PostSubject: When To Plant   When To Plant EmptyTue Mar 17, 2009 5:38 pm

I am going to plant a garden this year, but not sure what I can plant before the last frost. Is it safe to plant radish, peas right now? I have not had a garden in 20 years, so I have forgotten when and what I can plant. Also can I start my other plants in the house now, or is it to early. I know cat will know!

Peas are suppossed to be planted on St Patty's day and I always planted the first batch of onions then too. Strawberries are ok as long as you mulch them to keep them from heaving in case of freeze or frost. I dunno about radishes. Most of the other stuff I planted, like lettuce, peppers and tomatos I waited til late April or early May to stick outside.

I got beat to the post! And Puppylove is 100% right on!

Peas like lots of sunlight and can be planted now.
Radishes the book says to plant when the soil is dry. Right now our soil is too wet and squishy.
We're putting our strawberry plants out today and theres a roll of plastic to cover them if it gets cold again (the chickens get all the straw we have for their nesting box).

I'm going to start my tomato plants next week in the house.

I use the book Midwest Fruit and Vegetable Book for dates. Anything you want to know the dates for planting on just hollar! And if you need chicken poo to fertiilze ...... we have poo ... free! Lots of it! I need to clean the dropping pans out in the next few days so let me and I'll make a pile for you. Otherwise I fling it far and wide! Poo-flinging ... its an art! lol! The poo has wood shavings in it also.

Last frost is usually somewhere before May 10th so after that date should be safe to plant.
