How to make your own Laundry Detergent..
Things you will need :
a grater
a big pot to melt soap on stove
a large container that will hold at least 4 gallons of liquid (I bought a 7 gal. waste basket with lid at Walmart.)
a measuring cup
and a large spoon
INGREDIENTS :
one bar of soap, bath size (I use ivory) They suggest octagon or fels napta. (any kind of bath soap will do)
mule team borax
arm and hammer super washing soda (super activated baking soda will not work, it has to be arm and hammer super.)
DIRECTIONS :
Grate the bar of soap in the large pot add 6 cups of water. On med-low heat let this melt. this will take about 20 or 30 mins.
After the soap is dissolved, add 3/4 cup of borax and 3/4 cup of soda. Stir until "completely dissolved"... Now add 1qt of hot water, some add essential oils at this point to give a scent to the detergent, if you use the ivory soap, it has a fresh smell already...
In your large container, put 1 and 1/2 gals. of tap water. add to this the soap mixture and stir with the large spoon until all is combined. As it cools, it will gel but you can use it right away...
Use 1/2 cup detergent per washer load..
This detergent will not foam or have heavy suds which is good for you washing machine...
